Enilchek is a remote settlement and valley in eastern Issyk-Kul, roughly 150 km southeast of Karakol toward Sary-Jaz and the Chinese border. This is not a casual sightseeing stop but an expedition-style trip: abandoned blocks of a former mining town, stark high-mountain steppe, a hot spring by the Sary-Jaz River and approaches to the glaciers of the Central Tien Shan. The main reason to continue beyond the village is the route to Inylchek Glacier and Merzbacher Lake. The lake sits between the northern and southern branches of the glacier at about 3500 m and is known for filling with meltwater before periodically draining through the ice dam. The trek takes several days and involves river crossings, moraine and glacier sections, unstable slopes and remote camps; it is much safer to arrange it through local operators. Enilchek is inside a restricted border zone, so arrange the permit before travelling and carry both your passport and the original document. Services are sparse, signal and transport should not be treated as guaranteed, and weather can change quickly even in summer. Karakol remains the practical base for planning: road status, transport, guide support, permit rules and backup routes are easier to confirm there.

Safety

Enilchek requires expedition-level preparation: a remote border zone, long mountain-road access, sparse infrastructure, altitude, cold weather, river crossings and glacial terrain on routes toward Merzbacher Lake. Do not go without the original permit, passport, offline maps, warm clothing, food and water buffer, first-aid kit and a clear contact plan with your driver or operator. The glacier and lake route is best done with a guide or a party comfortable on moraine, ice and unstable slopes; after rain or at high river levels it can become dangerous. Kyrgyzstan's emergency number is 112.

Fees & prices

No separate entry ticket for the settlement or valley was confirmed. The border permit costs 3000 KGS per person; transport, guiding, camps and any helicopter logistics toward the glacier or Merzbacher Lake are separate operator costs that need a current quote. Checked: July 2026.

What to bring

Cash, offline maps, warm layer, water, power bank and documents; for mountain trips add food buffer and first-aid kit.
