Karakol and Around in 3–4 Days

Day 1. Bishkek → Karakol, Old Town

• Bishkek — Kyrgyzstan's main travel base: airport access, transport hubs, car rental, cafes and quick departures toward Chuy Valley gorges and the Issyk-Kul road.
• Karakol — The main base for eastern Issyk-Kul: a mountain town where travellers stage treks, ski days, hot-spring trips, Dungan food experiences and slow walks through Karakol's historic streets.

Driving: ~6 h 30 min

Overnight: Karakol (guesthouse) — Hostel beds start around 400 som (≈$5); a guesthouse double runs roughly 1,200–3,000 som (≈$14–34) (July 2026).

Karakol is 6–7 hours around the north shore: marshrutkas from the Western Bus Station (~600 som ≈$7, July 2026), scheduled GoBus coaches (~650 som) or a faster, pricier shared taxi. Give the evening to the old town — the Dungan Mosque, Holy Trinity Cathedral and an ashlyan-fu dinner. Ask your guesthouse to arrange tomorrow's Altyn-Arashan 4x4.

Day 2. Altyn-Arashan

• Altyn-Arashan — A high mountain valley above Karakol with hot springs, spruce forest and a rough access road usually tackled on foot or by prepared off-road vehicle.

Driving: ~5 h

Overnight: Karakol (guesthouse)

No ordinary car makes it up the valley: take a local 4x4 at 9,200–13,200 som (≈$105–150) per vehicle round trip (July 2026) — split it with other travellers — or hike ~14 km from Ak-Suu village. The pools up top cost 150–400 som (≈$2–5) at about 2,600 m; signal dies halfway, so bring a warm layer and cash. A solid variant is overnighting in the valley (1,000–1,500 som ≈$11–17 per person with dinner and breakfast) and walking down in the morning.

Day 3. Jeti-Oguz

• Jeti-Oguz — A red-rock gorge southwest of Karakol, known for the Seven Bulls and Broken Heart formations, a mineral-springs resort and hikes toward waterfalls.

Driving: ~2 h 20 min

Overnight: Karakol (guesthouse)

Marshrutka 331 reaches Jeti-Oguz village (40–50 som), but the rocks and sanatorium sit another 10–15 km up the valley, so a Karakol taxi is simpler: 800–1,200 som (≈$9–14) return, plus 500–800 som to continue to Kok-Jaiyk (July 2026). See Broken Heart Rock, climb the slope opposite the Seven Bulls and walk to the Maiden's Braids waterfall. If it is a Sunday, start with Karakol's animal market.

Day 4. South Shore — Barskoon and Skazka

• Barskoon Gorge — A south-shore Issyk-Kul gorge with spruce slopes, a chain of waterfalls and a road climbing through the Terskey Ala-Too toward the high plateau.
• Skazka (Fairy Tale) Canyon — A compact red-orange canyon on Issyk-Kul's south shore, good for a 1-2 hour wander among eroded ridges, lake views and a vivid road-trip stop.

Driving: ~4 h 5 min

For the last day go south with a hired car and driver (expect 4,000–6,000 som ≈$45–70 per vehicle for the day, negotiable, July 2026). Do the Barskoon waterfalls up the gravel road first, then Skazka Canyon (entry ~50 som ≈$0.60) in the softer late-afternoon light. If Bishkek is next, continue west along the south shore instead of backtracking to Karakol.
