The visa-free rule changed in January 2026

If a blog tells you Kyrgyzstan gives Western passports 60 visa-free days, it is out of date. Under Cabinet Resolution No. 855, in force since December 31, 2025, citizens of roughly 55 countries — the US, UK, all EU states, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore among them — get 30 days within any rolling 60-day period. The count is cumulative: hopping to Almaty and back does not reset it. Overstaying means a fine and an exit-visa procedure before you can leave, so do the maths on longer Central Asia trips.

Turkey, Serbia, Ukraine and Mongolia get 90 days in 180. Russia, the EAEU countries and Uzbekistan have separate, more generous bilateral regimes.

E-visa for longer stays

Need more than 30 days, or not on the visa-free list? Apply at evisa.e-gov.kg — the only official portal. Processing takes 3–5 business days; a tourist e-visa covers up to 30 days. Fee reports disagree — from $35 up to around $82 for the 30-day tourist visa (July 2026) — the portal shows the exact amount before payment. One real trap: e-visas are honored at Manas and Osh airports and at the main land crossings (Ak-Jol, Dostuk, Irkeshtam, Torugart among them), but not at every checkpoint — match your planned entry point against the portal's list.

Registration

Within the visa-free 30 days there is no registration requirement, so the registration anxiety in older guidebooks no longer applies to short tourist trips. E-visa holders must register within 5 working days of arrival; hotels and registered guesthouses normally file it electronically at check-in, so it mostly matters if you are camping or staying with friends.

Flying in

Manas (FRU), 30 km north of Bishkek, is the main gateway — about 45 destinations as of July 2026, but nothing nonstop from Western Europe or North America. The workhorse connections are Istanbul (Turkish Airlines daily, Pegasus to Sabiha Gökçen), Dubai (flydubai), Almaty and Astana (Air Astana — a 45-minute hop), Tashkent and Ürümqi. Istanbul and Dubai flights tend to land at unsociable hours; taxis run all night — use the Yandex Go app and skip the arrivals-hall hustlers.

Osh (OSS) serves the south with Istanbul and Russian routes — handy if your trip starts in Osh, the Alay Valley or the Pamir Highway.

Land borders, one by one

Kazakhstan. Korday/Ak-Jol on the Almaty–Bishkek road runs 24/7 and is Central Asia's busiest crossing: a walk-through affair, 30–60 minutes on a normal day; through buses and shared taxis make Almaty–Bishkek in 4–5 hours ($8–12 a seat). The seasonal Kegen/Karkyra post east of Issyk-Kul links Almaty, Charyn Canyon and the Kolsai Lakes directly with Karakol — daylight hours only, roughly May to October; year-round operation has been announced but don't plan around it.

Uzbekistan. Dostuk (Osh–Andijan) is the Fergana Valley's main gate, officially round-the-clock; in practice cross in daylight and avoid market days, when queues balloon. It is a walk-through border with taxis waiting on both sides.

Tajikistan. Closed after the 2021–2022 border conflicts, reopened on March 13, 2025: Guliston–Kyzyl-Bel (Isfara–Batken) and Madaniyat–Kairagach (Leilek) are working, and Karamyk in the Alay Valley followed on July 8, 2025. Foreigners are allowed through (July 2026). Kyzyl-Art on the Pamir Highway (4,280 m, Osh–Murghab) opens seasonally, roughly June–October; you need a GBAO permit for the Tajik side, and reports conflict on whether a Kyrgyz border-zone permit is still checked — ask a tour operator in Osh before driving up.

China. Both crossings — Torugart (3,752 m, Naryn → Kashgar) and Irkeshtam (Osh → Kashgar via Sary-Tash) — work weekdays only and close for Chinese public holidays (Golden Week in early October, Lunar New Year). A Chinese visa must be arranged in advance. Torugart cannot be crossed independently: Chinese-side transport has to be pre-booked through an agency ($100–200 per person in logistics). Irkeshtam is the saner option, though even there most travelers cross on arranged vehicles. China runs on Beijing time — two hours ahead of Kyrgyzstan.

Combining countries

Kyrgyzstan pairs naturally with its neighbors. Uzbekistan is visa-free for 30 days for EU and UK passports — and since January 1, 2026 for US citizens too; Kazakhstan gives most Western passports 30 days. The classic loop — Tashkent, the Fergana Valley, Dostuk into Osh, over the mountains to Issyk-Kul and Bishkek, out through Almaty — fits inside Kyrgyzstan's 30-in-60 window as long as you count the days.
