Issyk-Kul in 7 Days

Day 1. Bishkek → Burana → Cholpon-Ata

• Bishkek — Kyrgyzstan's main travel base: airport access, transport hubs, car rental, cafes and quick departures toward Chuy Valley gorges and the Issyk-Kul road.
• Burana Tower — The minaret of ancient Balasagun and the easiest historic stop between Bishkek and Issyk-Kul: tower, small museum, balbals and open Chuy Valley views.
• Cholpon-Ata — The main resort hub on Issyk-Kul's north shore: beaches, hotels, Rukh Ordo, the petroglyph museum and a useful base for the Kungey Ala-Too gorges.

Driving: ~4 h 20 min

Overnight: Cholpon-Ata (guesthouse) — Book ahead in July–August: simple rooms from about 800 som (≈$9), two-person cottages around 4,500 som (≈$50) (July 2026).

Leave in the morning: Burana is about 1.5 hours out and an hour on site is enough (entry 220 som ≈$2.50, July 2026). Then Boom Gorge and the north shore; the Red Bridge makes a good leg-stretch toward Konorchek, but skip a long canyon hike in summer heat. Check in and walk the Cholpon-Ata waterfront by evening.

Day 2. Grigorievka and Semyonovka Gorges

• Grigorievka Gorge (Chon-Ak-Suu) — A forested north-shore Issyk-Kul gorge with the Ak-Suu river, three small mountain lakes, summer yurt stops and an easy pairing with neighbouring Kyrchyn/Semenov Gorge.
• Semyonovka Gorge — A north-shore Issyk-Kul gorge with paved access, spruce-covered slopes and the wide Kyrchyn valley known from the World Nomad Games.

Driving: ~3 h

Overnight: Cholpon-Ata (guesthouse)

A day in two Kungey Ala-Too gorges. Grigorievka charges entry — 80 som per car plus 220 som (≈$2.50) per foreign visitor (July 2026); higher up expect yurts, kumis and horse rides. The dirt jailoo link across to Semyonovka is usually passable in summer, but confirm locally — otherwise do two separate in-and-outs from the highway. Beach time or the petroglyph field in the evening.

Day 3. Cholpon-Ata → Karakol

• Cholpon-Ata — The main resort hub on Issyk-Kul's north shore: beaches, hotels, Rukh Ordo, the petroglyph museum and a useful base for the Kungey Ala-Too gorges.
• Karakol — The main base for eastern Issyk-Kul: a mountain town where travellers stage treks, ski days, hot-spring trips, Dungan food experiences and slow walks through Karakol's historic streets.

Driving: ~2 h 30 min

Overnight: Karakol (guesthouse) — A guesthouse double runs roughly 1,200–3,000 som (≈$14–34) (July 2026).

Morning for the petroglyph museum or Rukh Ordo, then the ~140 km drive to Karakol. Spend the evening in the old town: the Dungan Mosque, Holy Trinity Cathedral and an ashlyan-fu dinner. If you want tomorrow's Altyn-Arashan shuttle, arrange the 4x4 today through your guesthouse or a tour office.

Day 4. Altyn-Arashan Side Trip

• Altyn-Arashan — A high mountain valley above Karakol with hot springs, spruce forest and a rough access road usually tackled on foot or by prepared off-road vehicle.

Driving: ~5 h

Overnight: Karakol (guesthouse)

The one day an ordinary car cannot do: the track up the valley is big rocks and river fords, so leave your sedan in Karakol. A local 4x4 runs roughly 9,200–13,200 som (≈$105–150) per vehicle round trip (July 2026); the alternative is hiking ~14 km from Ak-Suu village. Up top are hot pools (150–400 som ≈$2–5 per person) at about 2,600 m; phone signal dies halfway, so bring a warm layer and cash.

Day 5. Jeti-Oguz and Kok-Jaiyk

• Jeti-Oguz — A red-rock gorge southwest of Karakol, known for the Seven Bulls and Broken Heart formations, a mineral-springs resort and hikes toward waterfalls.

Driving: ~1 h 10 min

Overnight: Jeti-Oguz (yurt camp) — Kok-Jaiyk's yurt camps run in summer at about 1,300–2,200 som (≈$15–25) per person with meals (July 2026).

A short hop: Broken Heart Rock on the way in, and the best Seven Bulls view is from the short climb up the opposite slope. Asphalt ends at the sanatorium; the track on to Kok-Jaiyk is rough but fine for a careful sedan in dry weather. Walk to the Maiden's Braids waterfall in the afternoon and sleep in a Valley of Flowers yurt.

Day 6. Jeti-Oguz → Barskoon

• Barskoon Gorge — A south-shore Issyk-Kul gorge with spruce slopes, a chain of waterfalls and a road climbing through the Terskey Ala-Too toward the high plateau.

Driving: ~2 h 10 min

Overnight: Barskoon Gorge (guesthouse) — Guesthouses are in Barskoon village by the shore road; the gorge itself has no beds, only yurt cafes and camping spots.

Drop out of the valley and head west along the south shore to Barskoon village, then up the gravel gorge road to the Tears of the Leopard and Aksakal's Beard waterfalls and the Gagarin monuments. Treat river water before drinking. After rain, give the gravel section extra time.

Day 7. Skazka Canyon and Back to Bishkek

• Skazka (Fairy Tale) Canyon — A compact red-orange canyon on Issyk-Kul's south shore, good for a 1-2 hour wander among eroded ridges, lake views and a vivid road-trip stop.
• Bishkek — Kyrgyzstan's main travel base: airport access, transport hubs, car rental, cafes and quick departures toward Chuy Valley gorges and the Issyk-Kul road.

Driving: ~4 h 55 min

Hit Skazka in the morning for softer light and less heat — 1–2 hours on the ridges is enough (entry ~50 som ≈$0.60, July 2026). Then it is a long run to Bishkek along the south shore via Balykchy, about 4.5–5 hours of actual driving. Fuel up in Bokonbaevo or Balykchy and save energy for Boom Gorge.
