Burana Tower

Burana Tower stands near Tokmok, about 80 km east of Bishkek, on the site of medieval Balasagun. The city belonged to the Karakhanids on the Great Silk Road, and the tower itself is an 11th-century minaret. Today the main remains are the tower, earthworks, mausoleum traces and Turkic stone balbals. The visit is short but worthwhile: climb the narrow internal stairs, walk the museum complex, see the stone figures and look across the eastern Chuy Valley toward the Kyrgyz Range. The surviving tower stands about 21-25 m high (sources vary on the exact figure); in the medieval period it stood above 40 m before its upper section collapsed after earthquakes. Burana works well as a half-day trip from Bishkek, a stop with Tokmok, or a practical pause on the way to Issyk-Kul's north shore. The road is across the valley and does not require a 4x4. Without a car, take a marshrutka to Tokmok, then use a local Burana marshrutka, taxi or negotiated return ride; check same-day timings before relying on the bus. The complex usually opens daily from 09:00 to 17:00. The site has the tower, a small museum, balbals, parking and basic toilets, but bring your own water and snacks rather than counting on food near the entrance.
