Kyrgyzstan with a camper

Kyrgyzstan is quietly one of Asia's best camper destinations: wild camping is de facto free and completely normal, and a fully paved ring road circles Lake Issyk-Kul, stringing together beaches, mountain valleys and Silk Road history. This collection is built around the anchors of that ring — Cholpon-Ata, Semyonovka Gorge with fifteen kilometres of asphalt into the mountains, Karakol, Jeti-Oguz (sealed road to the sanatorium) and Skazka Canyon — plus paved Chuy Valley stops and the southern cities. At Skazka and the Konorchek trailhead the turn-off from the highway is a short flat dirt approach: take it slowly and a trailer manages fine. The honest part: a trailer narrows your map. Dirt passes to Son-Kul or Kel-Suu and the Alay approaches are no place for a rig — park the camper in a guesthouse yard at a hub (Bishkek, Karakol, Kochkor, Naryn, Osh) and do those as side trips in a light vehicle or with a local driver. Expect washboard as soon as the asphalt ends, no dump stations anywhere in the country, and cold nights at altitude even in July.
