Konorchek Canyons

Konorchek, also known as the Red Bridge Canyons, sits in Boom Gorge about two hours from Bishkek on the road toward Issyk-Kul. The practical starting point is the Red Bridge by the A365 highway: there is parking and a cafe by the road, then the trail passes under a railway bridge and follows a dry riverbed toward the red formations. You do not need a multi-day trek to see the first formations. It is roughly 2 km along the dry riverbed before entering the main canyon area; guided itineraries commonly treat the walk as about 3 km one way and around two hours to the viewpoint area, while a longer route can reach about 11 km out and back. Once inside, the red sandstone and clay form towers, walls and "castles" carved by wind and water. The main practical limit is the desert-like environment. In summer it is hot, dry and has very little shade. Bring water, a hat, sunscreen and proper footwear for the rocky trail. After rain or during snowmelt, the dry riverbed can be less predictable, so first-time visitors are better off choosing spring or autumn and carrying an offline map.
