Cholpon-Ata sits on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul, roughly midway between the lake's western approach and Karakol. It is a small town that turns into a busy summer resort: beaches, sanatoriums, guesthouses, restaurants and lakeside walks. The town sits at roughly 1,633 m above sea level. The town and its immediate surroundings have several strong stops: Rukh Ordo cultural center, the historical museum, the lakeside hippodrome and the open-air petroglyph museum. The petroglyph field covers a large stony area with hunting scenes, animals and nomadic-life motifs. Safety
In season, the main risks are heavy traffic on the lakeshore road and near beaches, sun exposure, dehydration and swimming when the lake is windy. For gorge trips, check weather and unpaved-road conditions separately from this town card.
