First Time in Kyrgyzstan: 10 Days

Day 1. First day in Bishkek

• Bishkek — Kyrgyzstan's main travel base: airport access, transport hubs, car rental, cafes and quick departures toward Chuy Valley gorges and the Issyk-Kul road.

Overnight: Bishkek (hotel)

Keep arrival day deliberately light: Ala-Too Square, Erkindik Boulevard and a market are enough after a flight. At pickup, check the insurance, spare wheel and the rental company's restricted-road list. Download offline maps and withdraw cash while city services are close.

Day 2. Ala-Archa day trip

• Bishkek — Kyrgyzstan's main travel base: airport access, transport hubs, car rental, cafes and quick departures toward Chuy Valley gorges and the Issyk-Kul road.
• Ala-Archa National Park — Kyrgyzstan's most accessible high mountains: an alpine gorge with glaciers and a waterfall just forty minutes from downtown Bishkek.

Overnight: Bishkek (hotel)

Start early because storms tend to build after midday. Choose the easy riverside trail or the Ak-Sai waterfall rather than forcing the longer Ratsek Hut climb into an acclimatisation day. Admission is 200 som per person plus roughly 500–700 som for the car (July 2026).

Day 3. Bishkek → Burana → Kochkor

• Bishkek — Kyrgyzstan's main travel base: airport access, transport hubs, car rental, cafes and quick departures toward Chuy Valley gorges and the Issyk-Kul road.
• Burana Tower — The minaret of ancient Balasagun and the easiest historic stop between Bishkek and Issyk-Kul: tower, small museum, balbals and open Chuy Valley views.
• Kochkor — A practical hub on the road from Bishkek toward Naryn and Son-Kul, used for transport, yurt-camp bookings, horse trips and felt-work workshops.

Break the drive at Burana Tower before continuing through Boom Gorge. The site normally opens 09:00–17:00 and foreign admission is 220 som (July 2026); the stair is narrow and food at the gate is limited. Reconfirm the Son-Kul vehicle and yurt camp after reaching Kochkor.

Day 4. Kochkor → Son-Kul

• Kochkor — A practical hub on the road from Bishkek toward Naryn and Son-Kul, used for transport, yurt-camp bookings, horse trips and felt-work workshops.
• Son-Kul Lake — A high alpine lake and summer jailoo in Naryn Region, with yurt camps, horses, open pasture and access over seasonal mountain passes.

Driving: ~3 h 30 min

Overnight: Son-Kul Lake (yurt camp)

Use Kalmak-Ashuu only after a current pass and weather check. The final section is unpaved, so leave margin for a slower ascent and carry a fuel buffer. At roughly 3,000 m, keep the afternoon easy, hydrate and expect little or no phone signal.

Day 5. A full day at Son-Kul

• Son-Kul Lake — A high alpine lake and summer jailoo in Naryn Region, with yurt camps, horses, open pasture and access over seasonal mountain passes.

Overnight: Son-Kul Lake (yurt camp)

Leave the car at camp and explore the shore on foot, or arrange a short horse ride through your hosts. Weather turns quickly on the exposed plateau and summer nights are cold, so keep a warm layer and rain shell handy. Filter or boil lake water.

Day 6. Son-Kul → Skazka → Karakol

• Son-Kul Lake — A high alpine lake and summer jailoo in Naryn Region, with yurt camps, horses, open pasture and access over seasonal mountain passes.
• Skazka (Fairy Tale) Canyon — A compact red-orange canyon on Issyk-Kul's south shore, good for a 1-2 hour wander among eroded ridges, lake views and a vivid road-trip stop.
• Karakol — The main base for eastern Issyk-Kul: a mountain town where travellers stage treks, ski days, hot-spring trips, Dungan food experiences and slow walks through Karakol's historic streets.

Driving: ~7 h 30 min

Overnight: Karakol (guesthouse)

This is the longest transfer, so leave after an early breakfast and take the descent patiently. Allow 1–2 hours at Skazka; the small cash fee is about 50 som and the loose, exposed ridges are best outside midday heat (July 2026). Reach Karakol before dark.

Day 7. Karakol and Jeti-Oguz

• Karakol — The main base for eastern Issyk-Kul: a mountain town where travellers stage treks, ski days, hot-spring trips, Dungan food experiences and slow walks through Karakol's historic streets.
• Jeti-Oguz — A red-rock gorge southwest of Karakol, known for the Seven Bulls and Broken Heart formations, a mineral-springs resort and hikes toward waterfalls.

Driving: ~1 h 40 min

Overnight: Karakol (guesthouse)

Use the morning for the Dungan Mosque and Holy Trinity Cathedral, then drive to Jeti-Oguz's red cliffs. Tarmac reaches the sanatorium but the track toward Kok-Jaiyk is rougher; after rain, stop at the rocks and short viewpoint. Return to Karakol for the night.

Day 8. Altyn-Arashan by local 4x4

• Karakol — The main base for eastern Issyk-Kul: a mountain town where travellers stage treks, ski days, hot-spring trips, Dungan food experiences and slow walks through Karakol's historic streets.
• Altyn-Arashan — A high mountain valley above Karakol with hot springs, spruce forest and a rough access road usually tackled on foot or by prepared off-road vehicle.

Driving: ~5 h

Overnight: Karakol (guesthouse)

Leave the rental in Karakol: beyond Ak-Suu, boulders, fords and steep sections call for a prepared local vehicle. A return vehicle runs about 9,200–13,200 som and a private pool session 150–400 som per person (July 2026). Bring cash, a warm layer and an offline map.

Day 9. Karakol → Cholpon-Ata

• Karakol — The main base for eastern Issyk-Kul: a mountain town where travellers stage treks, ski days, hot-spring trips, Dungan food experiences and slow walks through Karakol's historic streets.
• Cholpon-Ata — The main resort hub on Issyk-Kul's north shore: beaches, hotels, Rukh Ordo, the petroglyph museum and a useful base for the Kungey Ala-Too gorges.

Driving: ~2 h 30 min

Overnight: Cholpon-Ata (hotel)

Make this an easy north-shore transfer after the mountain days. Pick one Cholpon-Ata sight, either Rukh Ordo or the petroglyph field, and leave time for the lake. July and August bring full rooms and heavier traffic, so book ahead and keep a time buffer.

Day 10. Cholpon-Ata → Bishkek

• Cholpon-Ata — The main resort hub on Issyk-Kul's north shore: beaches, hotels, Rukh Ordo, the petroglyph museum and a useful base for the Kungey Ala-Too gorges.
• Bishkek — Kyrgyzstan's main travel base: airport access, transport hubs, car rental, cafes and quick departures toward Chuy Valley gorges and the Issyk-Kul road.

Driving: ~4 h

Leave margin for resort traffic and the run through Boom Gorge. Do not connect directly to an international flight: summer weekends can add about an hour to the normal drive. Refuel and return the car in Bishkek.
