Son-Kul is Kyrgyzstan's second-largest lake after Issyk-Kul. It measures about 18 by 29 km, with depths up to 13 m, and the lake sits at roughly 3,000 m in a broad mountain basin of Naryn Region. The landscape is almost treeless: pasture, tough grass, edelweiss, yurt camps and a huge open horizon. The main season is short. The reliable window is roughly June to September; for the Kalmak-Ashuu road the quoted window sometimes runs to October — sources differ, and actual access depends on snow and avalanche work. In 2025 the Sary-Bulak — Son-Kul road over Kalmak-Ashuu was cleared and reopened at the end of April after the winter closure. In summer, nomadic camps move up from neighbouring valleys; outside the season the basin is nearly empty and pass roads need a current check. The best-known approach is via Kalmak-Ashuu from the Bishkek-Torugart road; travellers also use Terskei-Torpok / 33 Parrots, Moldo-Ashuu and Kara-Keche. For travellers, this is not a casual lakeside stop: bring a vehicle suitable for dirt roads, warm clothes, food/water buffer and an overnight plan. Horse routes and yurt nights are normally booked ahead: 2026 reference prices include 3-day group horse trips from 200 USD per person and local 3-4-day packages in Kyrgyz som that bundle a horse, guide, lodging and meals.

Safety

Son-Kul is high country around 3,000 m: nights can be cold even in summer, weather changes fast and signal may disappear. Check pass openings for your travel dates: Kalmak-Ashuu is closed each winter, and the road is cleared separately after snow and avalanche deposits. Do not drink lake water without boiling or filtering, and do not plan access outside the summer season without local road information.

Fees & prices

No general entry fee was confirmed; yurt camps, transfers, horses and meals are paid separately. 2026 reference prices: a 3-day group horse trip from 200 USD per person; local 3-day packages from 21,360 KGS for one person and 63,840 KGS for a group of four. Checked: July 2026.
