Yurt stays

Sleeping in a yurt is the closest you can get to nomad Kyrgyzstan — six places with summer yurt camps, from Son-Kul lake to Tulpar-Kul below Lenin Peak. These are not stage props: the camps stand on working summer pastures. The anchor is Son-Kul, a high lake at about 3,000 m ringed by seasonal camps; the list continues with the yurt stops by the Tash-Rabat caravanserai, camps at remote Kel-Suu, the summer yurts of Grigorievka Gorge, the guesthouse-and-yurt valley of Altyn-Arashan next to its hot springs, and Tulpar-Kul with its view of a seven-thousander. The season is short and the comfort is honest: most camps operate only in summer, with Son-Kul's reliable window roughly June to September. Nights turn cold even in July, phone signal is patchy to nonexistent, and everything is paid in cash. Kel-Suu requires a border-zone permit (allow at least ten working days) plus a proper 4x4 with a driver; the Tulpar-Kul area sits by the border zone too, so arrange the paper permit ahead. Book Son-Kul and Kel-Suu camps in advance through local operators or CBT offices.
