Ala-Archa National Park

Ala-Archa is a national park in the Kyrgyz Range, protected since 1976: 16,500 hectares of gorges, Tian Shan spruce forest and more than twenty glaciers squeezed between 4,000-metre peaks. Elevations run from about 1,500 m at the gate to 4,895 m at Semenov-Tian-Shansky Peak — yet the park is under an hour on sealed road from southern Bishkek, which makes it the single easiest way to stand in serious mountains on a Kyrgyzstan trip. Trails cover every level. The gentle option follows the Ala-Archa river from the alplager base area (an easy 2–6 km, fine with kids). The classic is the Ak-Sai waterfall trail: roughly 8 km round trip with a steady climb, 2–3 hours each way. Strong hikers continue to Ratsek Hut (~3,300 m, another 3–4 hours), the mountaineers' base camp beneath Korona and Free Korea peaks. The forested Adygene valley with its waterfalls is a quieter alternative. The park is open year-round and the road is plowed in winter, but upper trails carry avalanche risk in the cold season — winter visits are for the lower gorge. Best months are summer and early autumn. A free shuttle runs from the gate to the trailheads.
