Budget
For two, budget roughly 50,000–70,000 som (≈$570–800) from Kochkor through the return to Naryn: transfers, four nights, basic meals and Tash-Rabat entry (July 2026).

Son-Kul sets the short operating window: its passes close every winter, and reopening depends on snow and road clearance. Even in summer, check Kalmak-Ashuu and the final dirt road to Tash-Rabat before setting out.

Information reflects the verification dates shown. Confirm road conditions, weather, prices and access before departure.

Day by day

  1. Day 1 · Kochkor → Son-Kul

    Kochkor Son-Kul Lake

    Travel time: ~3 h 30 min

Overnight: Son-Kul Lake · yurt camp — Two nights in one camp preserve a full lake day without changing yurts; reserve the stay and meals before climbing to the plateau.

Use Kochkor for cash, supplies and a final check on the vehicle, yurt booking and Kalmak-Ashuu road. The lake approach crosses a dirt pass, so high clearance is preferable and rain can slow the drive. Keep the first evening gentle at roughly 3,000 metres.

  2. Day 2 · A Full Day at Son-Kul

    Son-Kul Lake

    Travel time: ~0 min

Overnight: Son-Kul Lake · yurt camp

Keep this day for the shore and open jailoo; arrange any horse ride through the camp and match it to your experience. Weather shifts fast, signal is patchy and summer nights are cold. Boil or filter lake water before drinking it.

  3. Day 3 · Son-Kul → Kochkor → Naryn

    Son-Kul Lake Kochkor Naryn

    Travel time: ~5 h 30 min

Overnight: Naryn · guesthouse — A simple bed with breakfast runs about 800–1,500 som (≈$9–17) per person (July 2026); book ahead in peak season.

Descend by the checked Kalmak-Ashuu route, then continue on pavement through Kochkor to Naryn. It is a long transfer day, so do not pair it with a morning horse ride. In Naryn, withdraw cash, refuel and confirm the Tash-Rabat driver because no scheduled service reaches the valley.

  4. Day 4 · Naryn → Koshoy-Korgon → Tash-Rabat

    Naryn Koshoy-Korgon Tash-Rabat

    Travel time: ~3 h

Overnight: Tash-Rabat · yurt camp — Simple camps with meals run roughly 1,500–2,000 som (≈$17–23) per person (July 2026); bring cash and warm clothing.

Walk the exposed mud-brick ruins at Koshoy-Korgon; current museum hours and fees remain unconfirmed. Continue to Tash-Rabat, allowing extra vehicle margin and time on the rough final dirt section after rain. Caravanserai entry is an indicative 100–150 som (≈$1–2) per person (July 2026).

  5. Day 5 · Tash-Rabat → Naryn

    Tash-Rabat Naryn

    Travel time: ~2 h

Use the morning for a short valley walk, but do not continue toward Chatyr-Kul without checking its separate border-zone permit. With no reliable signal in the valley, confirm the return car the night before. The drive back to Naryn takes about two hours.

What to bring

  • Kochkor

Cash, offline maps, a warm layer for onward trips, a power bank and time to arrange transport.

  • Son-Kul Lake

Warm layer and hat, rain shell, sun protection, cash for yurts and horses, water/filter, first-aid kit, offline map and fuel buffer.

  • Naryn

Cash, offline maps, a warm layer, power bank, water buffer for drives and passport/copies for possible permits.

  • Koshoy-Korgon

Cash, offline maps, warm layer, water, power bank and documents; for mountain trips add food buffer and first-aid kit.

  • Tash-Rabat

Warm layer, wind shell, water or filter/stove, cash for entry/yurt stays, offline map and documents. Bring enough cash for yurt stays: as of July 2026, expect roughly 1,500-2,000 som per person for simpler camps with meals. A more comfortable option publishes rates in US dollars: double occupancy is $60 with breakfast, $70 with breakfast and dinner or $80 with full board; single occupancy is $95, $100 or $110 respectively (checked 31 July 2026).

not required

In Kochkor itself, normal care with belongings and transport arrangements is enough. The main risk starts after leaving for Son-Kul: check season, passes, weather, vehicle type and return timing.

Permit
not required

Son-Kul is high country around 3,000 m: nights can be cold even in summer, weather changes fast and signal may disappear. Check pass openings for your travel dates: Kalmak-Ashuu is closed each winter, and the road is cleared separately after snow and avalanche deposits. Do not drink lake water without boiling or filtering, and do not plan access outside the summer season without local road information.

Naryn

41.42860, 75.99760 · 2GIS · Google Maps

Road
paved
Permit
not required — No permit is required for the city. Kel-Suu, Chatyr-Kol, Aksay, Arpa, Torugart and other Naryn border-zone areas require a border permit: CBT asks for passport scans, the start date and at least one week for processing; carry the original paper permit.

In town, use normal care with belongings, cash and night transfers. Before leaving for At-Bashy, Tash-Rabat, Kel-Suu or passes, check weather, road condition, fuel, signal and permits; border-valley routes can involve passport and original permit checks, distances are long and help can be far outside the city.

The ruins sit on an exposed high plain: in summer bring water, sun protection and a wind layer; in shoulder seasons expect cold wind and muddy gravel sections. Do not climb the mud-brick walls or remove pottery and other fragments from the site. Phone signal and services outside At-Bashy are limited, so keep offline maps and leave time for the return drive.

Permit
not required — No permit was confirmed for a standard Tash-Rabat visit; check permits separately if continuing toward Chatyr-Kul or border zones.

The 3,100-3,200 m altitude makes weather cold and changeable even in summer. Bring warm clothing, water or a way to boil/filter it, an offline map and time buffer for the dirt road. Before continuing toward Chatyr-Kul, check border-zone rules separately.
