Kyrgyzstan in December: where to go
December flips the switch on winter: the first heavy snowfalls bring Karakol's ski base to life — opening dates ride on the snow, so check before an early-month trip — and Jyrgalan's freeride season gets under way. The New Year stretch from December 31 to January 10 is the busiest window of the whole winter; book Karakol beds months ahead. Beyond the ski hills the country runs quiet: the shortest days of the year, Bishkek under smog and holiday bustle, every high road closed until late spring. Issyk-Kul empties but never freezes — the "warm lake" earns its name even in hard frost — and walking its deserted winter beaches is an underrated pleasure of the season.
