Kyrgyzstan in October: where to go
October belongs to the valleys: autumn colour, calm clear spells and hardly another traveller in sight. The month's main event is in the south — walnut season in Arslanbob, when whole families move into the world's largest walnut forest for weeks, and the village usually holds its harvest celebration early in the month. The alpine country, meanwhile, is locking up for winter: one serious snowfall can seal a dirt pass overnight, the yurt camps are gone, and the seasonal border crossings close for the year. Keep an October plan flexible — it is already winter above 3,000 m and the best autumn of the year below, with the line between the two moving on every forecast.
